The History of Fire Sprinklers: Invention & Innovation
The History of Fire Sprinklers
Walk into any modern building today and chances are you’ll see a fire sprinkler system quietly tucked into the ceiling, ready to save lives at a moment’s notice. In fact, fire sprinklers are so essential to our safety that it’s hard to imagine a time when buildings went without them. Fire Sprinkler Design has come a long way since then. But who actually came up with the idea? And how did fire sprinklers evolve into the systems we rely on today?
Let’s dive into the surprisingly explosive history of fire sprinklers.
The First Fire Sprinkler System: An Explosive Start

Our story starts in 1723 with Ambrose Godfrey, a chemist with a dramatic flair. He developed what’s widely considered the first automated fire suppression system, and it involved gunpowder.
His idea was to use small explosive charges to release a large volume of water over a fire. It was risky, but at a time when fire safety was virtually non existent, it was a groundbreaking invention.
From Stage to Safety: Sprinklers at the Theatre Royal
A century later, British inventor William Congreve designed a much safer and more sophisticated system for London’s Theatre Royal. His innovation used an airtight reservoir with 100 tonnes of water connected to perforated pipes throughout the building.
This setup could douse flames efficiently, but it still required manual activation. The journey toward a fully automatic system was far from over.
Making It Automatic: The Real Game-Changer

In the 1860s, inventors began focusing on automation. Though early ideas were clever, it wasn’t until 1872 that a functional automatic system came into use. These early systems could detect heat and trigger water flow on their own, marking a major leap forward.
The design stayed largely unchanged for decades. Because it worked.
From Innovation to Regulation
By 1954, sprinkler system designs had reached a mature stage. The shift in focus moved from inventing to implementing them widely.
By the year 2000, fire sprinklers became common in schools, hotels, and other public buildings. In 2013, new regulations made them mandatory in many newly constructed buildings.
Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2017, UK fire safety laws tightened further. Today, all newly built apartment blocks are required to include sprinkler systems.
